Maame Biney Portrait

You will probably never see Maame without a smile on her face contributing to her favorite quote, “Laugh until you can’t laugh anymore.” She began speed skating at six years old and made the switch at an early age after she was told that she was going to be a fast figure skater. In addition to speed skating, she competed in taekwondo until 2015. She enjoys her time in the classroom and claims that she could do chemistry all day with hopes of becoming a chemical engineer eventually. She will eat any type of meat, enjoys listening to pop music and says that her favorite movie is “Titanic” and that it makes her cry every time.

In 2018, Maame became the first black women’s speedskater to make the U.S. Olympic Team in the 500m and 1500m. For the 2022 Beijing Games, Biney is the only returning member of the Olympic Team; she’ll be competing in the 500m, 1000m, 1500m and Team Relay.
